An Arctic Snow and Ice Control employee welds behind safety curtains while manufacturing snow plows at the company's manufacturing facility in Kankakee, Illinois. I was shooting a workforce development story for Images of Kankakee River Valley Magazine. Not only is this not an easy topic to illustrate, but I was not having any luck getting local companies to call me back. Thanks to the Dave Hinderliter at the Kankakee River Valley Chamber of Commerce and to Mike Van Mill and Gina O'Neill of the Economic Alliance of Kankakee, I was able to get inside of Arctic Snow and Ice Control which manufactures snow plows in Kankakee. The facility was full of workers welding, grinding and painting various snow plow parts. It was very dark inside and good pictures were not as obvious to find. After walking around for a while, I finally spotted a good angle shooting a welder surrounded by safety curtains. From most angles, the curtains were dark red and terrible to photograph, but from one angle, light filterning through an open garage door created a red glow around the welder. And when the torch was turned on, that also added it's own colorful blue, orange and white light. The whole scene reminded me of something you'd see in a Star Wars movie and made for one of my all-time favorite welding photos.
