I took this shot from the Shelby Street Bridge. I like the way the light reflects on the center building, which is in turn a reflection of the light from the taller building in front of it (Nashville's famous "Batman" building). It's all about the angles! This photo was taken while shooting for a publication for the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau visitmusiccity.com
For this shot of the Nashville international Airport, I was lucky enough to get special access to the tower on top of the airport. It was a wonderful place to shoot, with a 360-degree view. This photo was shot in April but at a different time of year when the sun would be directly behind the skyline, the view would probably be even better. Gotta love those redbuds. Spring is a great time of year to be photographing outside. This shot came about when I had a short gap in my schedule between two resturaunt shoots and went to Bicentennial Mall. I was framing a shot of the monuments when a lady went jogging through. A trip to Nashville's Patterson House is like a trip back in time. The atmosphere of this bar is like that of a speakeasy from the '20s. Greeters meet you in the lobby and usher you through a large blue curtain to a dark, cozy bar lined with floor to celing bookcases. Behind the bar, the very knowledgeable bartenders can mix any drink you can name! In this photo, you can see pre-concentrator and a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) developed in the University of Louisville's Micro/Nanotechnology Clean Room. I used a 70-200mm lens, an extension tube and two flashes to get this shot. I also improvised with two pieces of paper for reflectors, the top of a computer case for the black surface, and a piece of bubble gum to hold up the penny. Sometimes my friends call me MacGyver!
Sometimes location photography is all about making lemonade out of lemons. This is especially true with outdoor photography, where unexpected changes in weather or natural light can interfere with the best-laid plans. Case in point: while in Lexington, KY, I had planned to photograph the University of Kentucky's Memorial Hall from a certain angle. By the time I reached campus, however, that side of the building was covered in shadow. So I decided to shoot into the soft winter sun instead and adjust my white balance to match the university's colors.
